Parents of new babies are often overwhelmed by conflicting advice. The ‘You and your new baby’ class will empower you to raise your baby with a flexible, responsive parenting style, giving you confidence in your parenting skills and increasing your chances of getting breastfeeding off to a good start. The education provided in this class is framed in the evidence-based Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC) approach to infant care, originally developed by Dr. Pamela Douglas (GP, IBCLC, researcher and founder of the Possums Clinic in Brisbane). At Clare Medical Centre, the classes are delivered by NDC-accredited GP lactation consultant Dr. Melanie Considine.

Classes are aimed at expectant parents-to-be (both mums and dads) any time during pregnancy, as well as parents of babies under the age of 6 months.

Class duration is 2 hours and is held at the Clare Medical Centre conference room. Refreshments are provided (including tea, coffee, water and snacks), as well as written resources on completion of the class.

Topics covered in the class include:

  • Parenting values clarification
  • Infant sleep
  • Infant settling – “The Two Tools”
  • Feeding – breast and bottle
  • Parental mental health and wellbeing
